SCIO TOWNSHIP (WWJ) – The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating four burglaries to churches in the west side of the county.

And a pastor at one of the victimized churches said her parish has nothing but sympathy for whoever is perpetrating the crimes.

“It’s difficult to know you’re a person who’s been reduced to doing something like this and that we would want better things for this perpetrator — So the person doesn’t have to live this kind of life, there’s something better out there for them,” said Kathleen Meyers, pastor at St. John’s Lutheran in Bridgewater– where $500 and a laptop were taken.

Her church was broken into sometime overnight on October 29 when criminals entered the building by unknown means.

A week before, Salem Lutheran Church at 7474 Scio Church in Scio Township, was broken into sometime overnight on October 21, with the perpetrators getting inside by forcing open a small window and then rummaging through the building offices looking for money. However, it appears at this time that nothing was taken.

On the same day, the Bethel United Church of Christ located at 10425 Bethel Church in Freedom Township was broken into sometime overnight. The culprit somehow got into the building and then ransacked offices searching for money and other property. It appears that nothing was taken.

Duane Kuebler is a life-long member at Bethel United, where he says, to his knowledge there had never been a break-in before.

“Back 20 years ago, we didn’t lock the church, it’s one of those things we have to live with, I guess,” Kuebler said.

On October 30, the Clinton Church of God at 13080 Clinton Road in Bridgewater Township was broken into sometime overnight. A window was forced open and offices were rummaged. It appears nothing was taken.

And that’s not it: In the course of the investigation, it was discovered there have been numerous other burglaries to churches in Lenawee County and northern Ohio.

“The WCSO continues to investigate these incidents but has no suspects at this time,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a press release.

The WCSO is asking the public to call 911 and report any suspicious people or vehicles that are observed near churches after hours.
